With so many holidays falling on the weekend this year, everyone is bound to feel a little disappointed, to say the least! Thank goodness the month of May, otherwise known as “Family Month,” is here to provide some respite from that harsh reality as it brings with it, a series of days to celebrate from Children’s Day (5th) and Parents’ Day (8th) to Teachers’ Day (15th) and Spouses’ Day (21st). Hopefully, May will provide that long-awaited chance to get in some quality time with family after being held back by the hectic daily schedule.

Here we are, once again, to offer a few anecdotes of suggestions for spending some meaningful time with your family! And for those still hestitating about what to give as a gift, there’s certainly nothing better than giving the gift of a wonderful memory to those your care about. Just remember to keep those masks on, and yourself clean, so that we can all make through the month of May together in good health!

Teachers’ Day [May 15]Reminiscing School Days in Daehakro

Ever curious on how you were back in school? Let’s take a trip back in time to savor those days of living in the moment, chock-full of energy! In Korea, students present carnations to their teachers while occassionally holding surprise parties for those teachers that really stood out. Let’s take some time out of our day to observe the value and traditions of these great leaders in the classroom and remember those teachers that helped us grow into who we are today!

#TeachersDay, Korea’s very own!
The carnation flower

is most typical symbol of Teachers’ Day in Korea. Besides a carnation, students give bouquets, group notes from the class called “rolling paper” in Korean, and other cute, unique crafts to express their gratitude to their teachers. Students also held surprise parties and would even sing one of a series of traditional songs in celebration of their teachers. In fact, those songs sung to commemorate our valued leaders in the classroom are still remembered to this day! It went so far as toeven get competitive between classes to see who pulled off the best celebration for their teacher!

#JollyShop, Adorn a classic school uniform for the photo of a lifetime

The Jolly Shop, located in the Daehakro area, provides rentals of traditional school uniforms with a collage of photos from those who have come and gone. Be sure to leave your mark when you go too! Once inside, you can try on brand new uniforms and relive those days of old once more, with a smile drawing across your face. Besides uniforms, they have caps, bags, and a slew of items available for you to show off your sense of fashion in style! What’s better, you can even take a breathtaking shot at Naksan Park under the natural light of the vast, blue sky!

It’s actually not as well-recognized as Children’s Day or Parents’ Day, but it’s the ideal day to spend that romantic evening with your life partner! On that note, as an escape from the daily grind, we have a suggestion or two to help rekindle that excited romance between two lovebirds.

#YeoYongKuk, A leisure Korean spa treatment
There’s a quote from the novel, Yeoyonggukjeon, written in the times of the Joseon Dynasty, that goes, “Caring for the skin is like a king ruling his country.” It’s upon this very foundation that the Yeo Yong Kuk first opened its doors years ago. Some of the popular treatments include customized aromatherapy suitable for your body type, as well as traditional beauty treatment using a special ceramic tool. Couples can come and privately enjoy a potent beauty treatment that promotes relief from built-up fatigue and stress in the mind and body.
